Talking to a ex Commando and brit bike owner recently and he said after his bikes had done a few miles every time he did an oil change he added an oil additive that prevented smoking and reduced oil consumption . Has any one else tried this or got any thoughts about it ?

no idea what additive , my reasoning was if it got to a point were oil burning was a problem then it was engine rebuild time , but he sounded so convincing that i would get other peoples opinions

A switch from a thin oil to a thicker grade can sometimes help if oil burning is an issue . But it may reduce oil circulation on start up. oil burning usually is a result of worn rings, valve seals or loose guides . Aftermarket Oil additives are to be avoided , rare that they are effective .

Snake oil in hydrocarbon guise.
Save your money and start thinking of a top end overhaul.
If any of these additives were of any use all major engine oil producers would be shouting their praise from the roof tops.

If it’s smoking…
.. it's too late for additive stuff. They usually drop friction reducers (example; Teflon) into the oil to help a bedded in engine run smother. Won't help when it's out of spec but can prolong the wear life.
An engineering failing needs an engineered remedy, seek out the source and address it.

And teflon....
... is the last thing you want if there's any chance of the oil getting into the primary drive and clutch.
