My rebuilt gearbox, newly installed in the bike, spins reassuring freely. However, as soon as I tighten the nut on the gearbox sprocket, even hand tight, the sleeve gear turns noticeably less freely.
I have a theory that would render this phenomenon innocuous but would like to guard against wishful thinking.
To avoid prejudicing discussion I won't say now what my theory is, but would welcome any explanations offered.

Thanks to Stan for confirming my hypothesis (independently verified yesterday by yours truly, when it occurred to me to remove the sprocket and observe the spacer while turning the sleeve gear).

When you tighten the sprocket, it grips the spacer which must then turn in the sleeve gear oil seal, whereas loose, the sleeve gear is free to spin without any drag from the seal.
