961 poor starting

Hi i have just bought a 10 plate 961 se with 1500 miles recorded  it is a bad starter i was told dont use any throttle let it catch and tick over then it will run . i have tried this then tried with a bit of throttle but it takes alot of spinning over to get it to start then it stops . tickover is bad it starts eventually but wont tickover . the battery is good it spins over well just wont start straight away. i have not had chance to take the bike out yet due to the weather.  any help would be gratefully recieved   thankyou

Is the Choke operating correctly?

I don't think there is one as it's electronic

Do they even have a choke?. Modern computer controled lean burn engines possibly  use a temperature sensor to richen the mixture for starting, If that fails?.

Petrol engines must have a choke if they have a carburettor but of course, this is computor controlled, but it will have 'enrichment' to start, perhaps the temp sensor is not doing its job?
Having bought several second hand motors in the past, there is very often a 'snag' with the machine-that's why it is sold. Could be best to buy from a dealer, pay the extra premium so 'when/if' it goes wrong you can get it sorted for minium effort/cost!

Hi I bought it from a dealer with 3 months warranty  they said get it sortedcand bill them for the work . I rang a localish norton dealer and was told there is not a temperature sensor but the cannot book it in till mid September.

No offence Al,  but none if my bikes have chokes. And they all have Mk1 Amals.
I remove them as soon as I buy a new cable.

They all start quite well just with the tickler.

Would the bike be new enough to have an OBDII port ? A 2002 Triumph I played with had one and the error codes could tell you about iffy sensors , relays and fuel pumps that were contributing to the Engine Management Light coming on.

So much for a dealer saying there isn't a temp sensor   there is one under the inlet manifold . Do they all have noisy gearboxes it OK in top but 3rd and fourth tent to whine a bit especially on the overrun. Also the neutral light keeps flashing as does the low fuel light I stopped to.top it up and only took a fiver . Anyone had that fault

Difficult starting is pretty standard as the SE has massive injectors (the green bosch injectors on the SE are much bigger than the later bikes smpe bosch copies) and no idle air control. Once you've eventually got it to catch, and warmed up, it should be fine. Because of the injector size, they can also flood easily.
Yes primary side can sound like a cement mixer with a few bricks bouncing around.
Flickering warning lamps is down to electrical noise...normally exaggerated by turning the headlamp on. There's a technical service bulletin for each lamp and requires resistor leads placing in each circuit to suppress the noise/interference.
Cheers for the shout outs guys!

Thanks for that Stuart am used to the rattles off the old nortons but not the new ones . Where can I buy the resisters for the warning  lights and where are they fitted is there a any instructions  available   regards  John

I have the leads in stock...as I spent a very dull evening sat at the workbench making a batch up. I usually sell them just to customers in my workshop at £19.95 each plus labour for doing the neutral light one. The fuel light lead I don't charge labour on as it takes no time to do when I've already got the tank off for service work.
I'm guessing at £4 postage, so £43.90 and I'll stick a photo copy of each technical service bulletin in with it as well.

Thanks stu  I am Waiting for the sales guy to come back off holiday so I will call him and tell what you said and the price to supply the resisters  so will get back in touch with you   regards John

My second 961 developed engine starting problems on its 3rd day of ownership.
NML thought that it was the ignition timing sensor and sent me a replacement. This fits at the front of the engine over the camshaft.

That did not work, so the bike was collected for a factory check-up. The problem was eventually tracked down as a blocked breather pipe.

The bike was returned to me with a flat battery.  Wonderful!!!

Ignition timing sensor is within the primary cover, and incorporated into the stator assembly unit. The sensor at the front is the camshaft sensor.

Highly recommend having Stu Bodycote do a full health check on the 961. Sent my 2012 Mk 1 Sport to him after experiencing a gear selection problem which turned out to be a simple fix (clutch basket securing nut had loosened) but whilst with him got the thorough health check done. Fixed a number of small niggles I'd just ignored , like warning light anomalies (fitted electrical patches) and a weeping head gasket (retorqued head) but also did a number of recommended jobs , like fitting his breather mod , securing the gearbox sprocket nut properly with the tab washer (not done well at the factory) and replacing the copy Bosch components with original Bosch items. Also had a new rear tyre fitted while it was there.

Like a new bike when I got it back after just a two week turnaround. Nobody knows the 961 like Stu. Well worth the reasonable cost.

On starting from cold , don't touch the throttle when pressing the button. Mine fires up immediately , give it about fifteen - twenty seconds of tickover then throttle can be blipped without fear of stalling.

... and another recommended job I had done by Stu when rear wheel was off for a new tyre is replacing all cush-drive rubbers with a more durable one he offers as the originals were a softer compound and become mangled - which mine were.

Hi Stuart I have spoken to the dealer and he has agreed to pay for the wiring to cure the warning lights flashing . My number is 07875770804 if you can call and I will pay you thankyou
