7" Headlamp for Navigator

Forums

I'm looking at the picture of Martin Woltman's excellent Navigator Cafe Racer and it look like he's fitted a 7" headlamp, but retained the original Roadholder brakets.  I'd like to do something similar, is that an easy thing to fit I wonder?  The original headlamp on mine is 6" so can anyone advise how I get the extra space between the brackets?

Hi Nick,

If you have the standard set up for Navigator, then you have Roadholder forks on 7 inch centres to 1963 or 7 3/8 inch centres 1964 on. The best way for you mount your 7 inch shell IMHO.

Bike on centre stand front wheel in air.

Remove existing shell.

Loosen fork top nuts 3mm.

Loosen pinch nuts in lower yoke.

Hit the two top nuts down, careful of the chrome, so that the taper fit of the tubes into the top yoke is broken. No further.

Undo the fork crown nut until it touches handlebar or about 3mm.

Now, the top fork yoke can be raised a couple of mm and the fork ears can be rotated outward to suit your shell mounts.

The fork ears can look as though they are part of the lower fork shroud,  but the top ears fit quite tightly in a circular groove in the shroud and can be rotated within the restraints of the pinch nut on lower yoke.

Norton used this adjustment to fit same headlight in 7 and 7 3/8 Roadholders.

Reassembly is the reverse, as all the best book say.

Peter, that is exactly the kind of clear advice I was hoping for.  Thank you very much!

Its just as Peter says.

The reason for this is because the Roadholder forks & headlamp brackets for Dominators & Navigators are the same! As the Domi uses a Lucas 7" lamp, and the Navi a 6½" Wipac lamp, whilst there are 7" & 7 3/8" forks - there is a degree of adjustment available to you.

Thnx, Peter
