diy prep for painting on tinware previously chromed ?

Forums

After spending days overhauling my forks I notice that the shrouds are rubbing the sealholders and oil is seeping out of one of the damper bolts .  It all coming off again. I have some spare headlight brackets to replace the slightly buckled ones fitted but they are painted over chrome , I am going to have to treat the chrome to provide a key for new paint. I'm thinking of using battery acid to etch the chrome ,anyone tried this?. I will try a smidgion of locktite on the shroud screws and sealer on the damper bolts , plus crossed fingers .

I don't think I would try the acid-etch thing, if the slightest trace of it stays in a crevice it will ruin all your new paint, I think I would just use some 600 grade wet-and-dry on it, it worked when I painted my previously chromed  Velocette chaincase.
