Centre stand spring 1964 Electra

Forums

I want to replace the very weak centre stand spring and the attachment shows the latest version that I ordered from NOC ( plus for information the smaller spring is for models prior to '73 ) As can be seen the new replacement is too long. How have other Lightweight owners overcome this problem ?

Hi Rick,

I guess your original spring is the black one.

Just slightly strained. And I guess your stand is not held up fully, or with enough gusto to keep it up while riding the bumps.

Your recent purchase won't do.

I suggest you need the proper spring. Listed at Norvil. Any wear in the holes of the hooked spring mount aggravates the floppy stand problem. Any wear on the special 3/8 sleeve nut likewise.

The original spring is only just short enough to keep the heavier Electra stand up with all holes and the nut mentioned above in good condition.

Search this site 'navigator centre stand ' and a lot of useful stuff comes up.

Can't see your new spring, longer,  being any good.

I dont recognise that double spring either, I wonder if the club have it wrong? I have a late jubilee and i have the shorter spring, but i would add that even with taking the play out of the mechanism I still had to heat it and shorten it a tad to get the stand to stay up properly.

I’m not a fan of Norvil, they have sent me too many wrong bits in the past but they might be worth a try.

My Electra was fitted with the smaller diameter spring which wasn't strong enough to hold the stand against the stop.I fitted the larger diameter spring from the NOC and a new rubber on the stop which cured the problem.

Just to clarify the picture that Rick posted, I have annotated it for you as to what is what. See <Centre Stand Spring - inc new one-notes.jpg> attached.

It is clear from the photo, that the spring shown at the top, that is being sold by NOC Spares as P No 24674 cannot work - as its loo long.

Some part numbering confusion exists. The post-106840 (& all Electra) spring P No is 24674 in the 1964 Parts List for Jubilee & Navigator. However, the 1963 Provisional Manual & Parts List for the Electra lists this spring as 24672 - which is the number Norvil use (& they say it is a stronger version P No 22408 - the early version).

The replacement spring (22408) as supplied by NOC Spares for the earlier models looks OK (But I have yet to try one).

However, the spring used on post 106838 bikes (& all Electra) is different, as can be seen in the photo, as the relevant pivot point & 'C' anchor are different to the earlier bikes. Sadly the NOC replacement is too long to be of any use. See file attached, as well as the NOC offering below.

You will note from this photo, that the pre-'63 spring is longer than the post 106838 (& all Electra) spring. The later spring has to be shorter (thus stouter) as it has less space to work in.

You takes your pick from the suppliers offerings...BUT sadly, the NOC version of 24674 is not suitable.

I sent a picture to Norvil of the springs and they confirmed that the post '64 part no. 24672 is the same as that supplied by the NOC and they do not stock the later stronger spring so have fitted the pre '63  p/n 22408 and at the moment there is plenty of tension when the stand is retracted. Thanks for the responses from you all.         Rick.

I have bought the short stubby one for my 1962 Jubilee and i am sure it wont stretch that much I presume I need the 24674 springs above, If so do i attach one to the other or use them as a double spring?

thanks

For anyone with the later gearbox on Lightweight the centre stand spring 24674 is now back in stock at NOCshop. Later gearbox has a level plug below filler cover. Filler cover screws are one above the other.
