This maybe a cunning plan or just plain wrong, but here goes. I had my electronic ignition blow up on me this last summer and this led to an awful lot setting the white dots through the rotor in the old points position, checking for 28 B.T.D.C through the hole in primary case , forwards then backwards. It has occurred to me since " Is this the optimum position set the tappets ? First the left hand side then wind the engine round and do the same on the other ? Or has the Christmas break got to me? Thankyou

You're right..

... set them at TDC on the compression stroke although I'm never sure if this is always on the base circle. What you suggest would be OK for the exhaust cam but the inlet may not have left the quieting ramp.
