I’ve cleaned up the starter motor on my Electra, so it now spins. But I am missing the Fibre Insulating Liner that should be inside the commutator end cover. Can someone please tell me what material I should use?

Insulation - Electra starter end cover
Hi Doug,
I find PTFE baking sheet, as sold many places, is a good replacement for the sheet insulation used by Lucas.
Here are some photos, very poor I am afraid, which are of the Electra starter motor and as Joe Lucas sent out (I believe)

Be Careful
Bear in mind that this insulation could be critical. Should one of the brush wires touch earth you have the full power of your battery through the starter cables!!

As far as I remember of such a part, if a plate on the end is there for insulation, then any thing will do BUT if the manufacturers, LUCAS in 1959..... would have used a fibre board. Tufnel comes to mind. If it is around inside the cover then Tufnell will not bend. I would think that if it was there just for insulation with some though of it getting hot then material accordingly, but not PVC, cert5ainly a board of some sort.
