Slimline Fuel Tank fitting

When I bought my late 650SS, the condensers was fitted to that lug.

Edit The coils are fitted to the head steady. Seems very original for the late twin points ignition.

If you are really lucky, the rubber band will last more than 5 minutes, or until you have fitted the seat. I'm sure it is a case of "they don't make em like they used to", but I had 3 fail in short order.

I gave up on the 'genuine' ones and now use a piece of old bicycle helmet strap on mine.

...are great for this job.  Roughly 5mm round bands sticks with heat plate or Superglue. Available on line or if you know any one involved with conveyors with line shaft drive they will have plenty.

I have no idea what Norton originally bolted to this lug. But for the last 30 years  it has been the perfect location for my bikes encapsulated rectifier..... 

My M50 Slimline had its coil located on this lug.

Is it just a hangover from the wideline, when the petrol tank had a centre strap? Certainly that's what I used it for when I had an ali tank years ago. 

Jonathon  is correct.  Its the tab that the coil strap bolts to. 

On my Dommie I run the plastic rocker box oil feed pipe through the coil support hole.

In my rush to be "helpful" I have as usual only shown my ignorance: on reflection, the Wideline tank strap was of course held on at the back by a special bolt and toggle arrangement fitted into the tool tray. Nothing to do with the frame crosstube.

Of course, I could always just delete my posting- but where's the humility in that!

We are all prone to being "quick to help", that's not a failing, its an attribute.  I wish I knew that I  could delete postings......
