Modified Rear Suspension Mounting

As I approach the end of restoring my 72 Roadster I couldn’t work out why the seat didn’t fit properly - it rocks back and forth.  I thought the problem was the seat brackets but closer inspection has revealed that a previous owner had modified the rear suspension mounting brackets which has had the effect of raising the position of the suspension mounting bolts.  It’s not clear to me whether this was done as the result of accident damage or a deliberate move to lower the seat height.  I have two questions I hope forum members can answer for me - has anyone else seen such a mod before and can it be lived with or do I need to have the brackets replaced?

I measure the centre of the mounting braket at 63mm vertically down from the top of the rear loop tubes and 65mm back horizontally from the front of the main frame loop tubes. Looks like yours is about 40mm down from the rear loop.

I've only seen the mounting points modified to move them back, making the suspension unit more vertical.

If seat mounting and originality are not an issue then yes, you can live with it. Alf Hagon (and others) offer suspension units in 10mm length increments so just get ones that give you the correct ride height.

The seats are supplied new without the rubber buttons in the bottom, without the buttons then the seat will rock forwards and backwards.

Why not slot the seat brackets a bit with a round file until it lowers the seat down onto the rubber buttons?

The previous owner tried to do just that but the bend in the brackets to accommodate the suspension mounting spindle limit the amount by which you can drop the seat.  Thank you for replying.
