Frame bag for tools

Forums

Hi,

Have my new to me Norton commando mk3 finally up and running and would like to carry some tools. The under-seat tray from Andover is small so I was looking for a small leather frame or rail mounted bag, but haven’t had much luck beyond a leather tube on eBay to mount to the grab rail. Anyone know of a quality leather frame bag that fits etc. and looks good before I just go with the tube? Any help would be great. Nathan

Being an optimist and fond of travelling alone into the wilds out of phone coverage, I like to have tools, spare tube, first aid kit, food, water and all sorts of other stuff. Bear in mind that bike recovery even in civilised areas can take hours.

I routinely stick a tank bag with all the universal stuff I hope never to need on the bike. Note the spare petrol container on the back seat.

The last time it came in useful was to help out a stranded MZ.

Not relevant Gordon this is a Norton Forum, pictures of BSAs needing tools is not relevant.

Brings to mind the request elsewhere for pictures submitted for the next NOC calender not to have rubbish in the background eg "MacDonald wrappers, Coke tins, Triumphs"..... :-)

Nathan,

I had the same issue with my Commando so fitted a carrier and found a small leather "tool bag" as shown in the photo.  This served me well, then I changed to a single carburetor and could make a custom tool compartment where the large Mk3 air cleaner used to be.  The K&N filter is small enough to accommodate this.

Have since changed to Krauser luggage system so can put spares etc in the top box.  The other chrome carrier and leather bag would be available if you're interested (located in Somerset).

Posting a picture of a BSA? But the picture is of the tank bag and the spare fuel container. They just happen to be on a BSA at the time.

Reminds me of when I asked if I could attend an BSAOC rally on my Norton. Basically, no. So I left the BSAOC at that point and have never rejoined.

I am sure you wouldn't be turned away from a NOC rally if you turned up on a Moto Guzzi of even a motorhome for example, let alone a BSA.

Behave yourself Al.

... do extended tours on the continent on my Commando I used to have one pannier full of tools and spare bits. All I ever really needed was a 1/2" AF spanner, pliers and a screwdriver along with some electrical cable.

However I'm sure had I not had them I'd have needed them.

Come on Gordon, it was a light-hearted comment and it made me smile. The NOC welcomes all motorcycles and would never turn anyone away, but we can still have a laugh at them!

Buckle a pair of 1937 pattern haversacks together and throw them over the saddle. Not simply large enough for tools and waterproofs, but also for a Thermos of tea and a waxed-paper package of cheese and pickle sandwiches too. Make a day out of it ! Throwovers

If you have an Interstate model it is possible to make a much bigger tool box under the seat. In fact in the seat itself. I did this a few years ago to my Mk3. Using the oil container from a deep fat fryer, welded into the bare seat pan, approx where the pillion would sit. Access to the tool box is from underneath using a hinged flap held shut with dzus fasteners. After carving a recess in the seat foam and recovering the seat it is virtually invisible. Only by looking underneath can you see anything (the dzus fasteners)

In use, carrying a pillion, He or She, cannot tell they are sitting on a tool kit, spare clutch cable, 10" shifter, container of engine oil and another container of 'wonder wipes' (most essential, to clean up afterwards)

The seat i used i think was labelled Wassel and needed some work doing before it would fit properly so it was the ideal time to modify it.
