Sorry if this is a stupid question.
When I bought my 71' Commando project from the PO he had removed the front wheel and forks (to get the bike in his van he said). I have replaced the fork oil seals and bushes etc and am now attempting to reinstall the forks.
However I cannot work out what the external threads on the chrome fork tube top bolts screw into as they obviously do not screw into the top yoke due to the big difference in hole size. Please can someone explain how this works?
Thanks
Better ask than staying stupid.

Plus the top nuts hold the instruments on by clamping the holders to the top yoke. So it nut, holders, top yoke and stanchions. The damper rod is screwed into the bottom of the fork top nuts as well, forget that and no fork damping. You really do need the workshop manual.

Thanks for the information, I knew about the damper rod but not the top nuts.
I have a Haynes manual which came with the bike but it is almost useless. Where can I get a workshop manual?, I looked through the club publications but couldn't find it

Another vital resource is the Parts List for your model. Andover Norton's website makes brilliant use of the diagrams as part of their ordering system, but having the physical list in hand can be very helpful. This too is available on-line.
If you don't have a decent printer and/or want nicely bound versions of these publications I seem to recall that AN can supply reproductions.

Thanks Julian, I agree, AN's online parts diagrams are fantastic and I use them for almost everything I need as unfortunately they seem to have more parts in stock than the club.

The stanchions (the chromed 35mm tubes that goes into the yokes) is tapered on top to fit in the top yoke. They are threaded inside for the top nuts.
Do you have the workshop manual for the bike? If not get it.
