Hi. I’m rebuilding my Dommie 99’s front forks. I’ve a question about the nut that screws onto the top of the damper rod. Is that nut supposed to be done up tight against the underside of the stanchion top plug to lock the top plug onto the damper rod or is it screwed downwards to fix the Fork Spring Location Bush into the top of the fork spring?

Thanks Robert. I hadn’t worked out that the amount the rod nuts are screwed down the rod on each leg will affect the alignment of the wheel spindle holes but that makes perfect sense now I think about it. I have to admit that when I did the initial build (pre accident) I did find that the wheel spindle alignment was very tight - now I know why.

It’s all a learning curve…
It’s all a learning curve and if you get everything as right as it can be you finish up with a bike that’s zippy and a joy to ride , I’m still finding things to improve after 30 years on mine , I have a slightly twisted frame , surprising as it’s easily the best handling Norton I have ridden, what will it be like if I get it straight ? , no one will want to go on ride outs with me. !!.

If you put a block of wood under the front tyre it lifts the spring/damper rod assembly up allowing you to put the spring retaining nut onto the damper rod ( an equal amount for both legs , check that the wheel axle will pass easily thro the slider bottoms which need to line up) ,fit the chrome top nuts and lock against the rod nuts ,remove the wood block and do up the chrome nuts evenly both sides together. I use some long nose grips between the spring coils to grip the rod and allow me to tighten the rod nuts against the springs.
