'71 Fastback Fibreglass Tank

Just bought myself a 1971 Fastback to restore. Did the fibreglass tanks leave the factory, as new, with any sort of internal protective coating.  The one I have has a very light yellow covering inside.  The bike has come back from the States so I've no info as to what, if anything, has been done to it already such as a sealer.  The coating is intact but looks to be a very thin one?

Assume it's not done, also assume any new coating will eventually fail.

John thanks.  I'd made sensible assumptions when I first got the bike, and looked inside the tank.  I intended to re-do it anyway so I know where I am with it.  I'd fit a steel one if I could but apart from India I dont know who makes them, if they do of course.  Do you know if the made in India tanks are a good fit and worth buying?

In the US of A they have Marine quality petrol (Gas) that is E0. A lesson learned from motor boat owners with built in fuel tanks in their vessels.. Anyone with a GRP tank would have been wise to use this fuel.

I agree with John's comment above and remember that any FBHVC endorsed additive only slows down the destructive process of ethanol. It will not stop it but in another process it makes a lot of money to err  protect you from something unnecessary in the first place...

None of the Indian tanks is perfect but reviews of various tanks show that Royal Choppers and pummy8081 on ebay have a better reputation than most. Its better to buy them in the raw steel and then you will not be ruining a paint job to get them 100%.

Esso Synergy premium is E0 except in Scotland, SW England and NE England. Ignore the E5 label on the pump, it means up to 5% which covers 0%.

John thanks. That's the problem we've have down her.  I live in the South West.  However, I did know that ourselves and the North East were basically 'trial' areas for E fuels for a significant amount of time before they became more nationwide, for what ever reason.

My 1970 Commando Roadster came back from Canada and my friend Jeff Myers put an all new coating in it, for the new fuel. It did not work, so i bought a new steel fuel tank, and put the original yellow one on a shelf in the shed.

Hello,

Although my fibreglas tank was not leaking, I`ve fitted a steeltank.

I didn`t order one from India, but from Andover Norton in Germany (Joe Seifert). It fits without problems and it looks like a Norton tank, which is also important.
