Bush information

Forums

I am about to start fitting all new bushes etc. in my AMC gearbox in my 1962 650SS. I have watched Mick Hemming's gearbox CD but there is something I am not clear about; are any of the bushes free to rotate inside the hub or housing and also on the axle or gear shaft? For example are the bushes a press fit in the sleeve gear or should they rotate inside the sleeve gear and also revolve around the main shaft? What about all the other bushes?

Thanking you in advance for your help.

Hi Roger, I rebuilt a Commando Box and all the bushes were a tight fit, about one thou. interference. A good tip if one wants non-standard sizes is to buy oilite bushes and skim them to fit, it salvages very worn parts. If the bushes are loose in the sleeve gear, they come out as it changes gear, as far as I remember. I have a new old stock AMC box somewhere, I must find it one day. I bought it in 1972 from Russels at Clapham Junction for £40.
