Going to get my crank ground (hopefully) +10 , Its likely that I will have to get new rods as mine are a touch oval , however I may just re-use the old after a check and resize . What should they measure ?. I have checked and it would appear to me that the eye should be 1.6 " Not mentioned in any Norton literature that I have ever seen. A NOS old stock pair (don't ask!) varied by approx 4 thou undersize from side to side, Either my poor measuring , poor job at Nortons/ AMC , shrinkage in old age or rejects !!.
You can get big end eyes…

Robert - I just measured a spare rod. I find 1.607" in both directions. (That is not even a round value in metric, at 40.82mm). The micrometer scales 1.000 and 2.000 on its gauge bars. Seems to be a rather odd value. The nuts are not tight but all surfaces have been wiped clean and it's a snug fit.
Ps...is this the older design or might it be satisfactory?

Hi David, thats an 88/99 rod and your measuring gear looks more suitable than mine . But thats about 10 thou bigger than mine !! My suspicion is that the New old stock rods could be still unused from a dealers stock just because they have been tried on a crank and perhaps found to be a tight fit so put back in store. If they had been a tad loose i expect no one would have noticed and they would have been used. Going to measure a spare used rod that is somewhere in my junk.

I have a proper bore gauge - it's a bit more complicated to use, but much better that the "T" type. But the T type is I think more likely to under-read. I'll try the other one later this evening.

I am sure that I will be telling my granny how to suck eggs, but big-end eyes should be checked with the bolts torqued up.

Good point...I suppose if I ever reuse these rods I'll have to replace the bolts so I have nothing to lose if I tighten them properly.

I found a used rod that i bought from the club 20 years ago, rejected at the time as it is a bit battered around the small end. This measures 1.6oo" both sides and in all planes ,so that appears to be the dimension . Makes your 1.607 look a little suspect , and the NOS rods are no longer looking so attractive. As said they could be shaved and re-sized and are at least not fatigued half to death, I have heard that the alloy does age. Old bolts are ok as long as the threads are not stretched , I would rather them than some of the offerings.

I would imagine that once you know the true size the bore should be inside the rods, the most accurate way to measure them would be with a purpose made go no go mandrel/gauge. Wonder if the factory used them.

Niall, spot on…
The torque is low for alloy cap rods and quite critical. I cocked up on a model 7 thinking it was the same for all domi motors but as it tightened up on the journal at 25 lb ft I went to confirm in manual only to discover it’s as little as 15lb ft.
10 lb ft, the difference between free running or seized!

My suspicion is that my 99 rods (or at least one) was oval back 25 or more years ago. I polished the well worn journals and fitted new std shells and one rod did not want to run free and needed some "fetling" , Perhaps I had swapped them over. It has given good service since then but when my lad takes over the bike it needs to be as sound as i can get it.

You can get big end eyes resized, they plane a bit off the ends of the rod and the mating rod bottom and then hone the resulting smaller big end eye back out to size and circular.
