Coil Mounting Position

Hello all again,

As I continue on this 70 Commando Desert sled project I keep running into questions.  This one concerns which way the coils should mounted?

I have attached a photo of how they are mounted which is different than every other Commando coil positioning I have seen so far.  

But this being my first Norton project in my young 75 years, I thought I best get some advice on them.  They are very securely mounted and the high voltage towers align nicely with the spark plugs.  Is there an advantage in mounting them front to rear like all the others I have seen? 

Also there was only one old dead looking capacitor in place, but I purchased two new ones that I plan to mount directly to the coil mount.  I am wondering if there will be any issues mounting them to the coils?

Mounting coils to head steady rather than frame means they share all engine vibration, would not expect a long life.

Capacitors linked to coil can be in any convenient location, advantage of original commando set up is bracket and rubber boot was made for 3, if you fit 3 and one fails miles from home you can swap wires over in seconds.

Thank you that is so true with the iso mounts.  So I will make mount to the frame tube where someone had filled in with bondo I think.

Not that clear from the pictures but there seems to be something going on around the headstock. Is it a Commando frame? Maybe the coils are where they are 'cos the usually tank supports are missing.

You are correct the frame neck has been cut and raked and bondoded and was a chopper in one life or another.  I left it and added fork extensions as it is now a three wheeler under construction.  It will be for the back trails and dirt roads out here in the desert.  My balance is not what it used to be so I am making it a Norton I can have a chance to ride some.  I know it is blasphemy to the Norton purist.  But when you get to that point you do what is necessary to still ride.
