I have just bought a side stand from RGM and am having difficulty in fitting it to a Norton 650SS.In order to position it so as to contact with the engine plate the centre stand snags the mechanism. I have read previous forum replies and note that they have not helped me but it would seem there have been problems previously with trying to fit side stands.
side stand
Thank you Alan. I am in the process of removing inner and outer primary chain case covers; a bit of a problem but that seems the only way to allow side stand fitting with my RGM one.

Thanks Alan. At last I have the inner chaincase off and in the process of filing away some of the part of the side stand assembly that butts up to the engine plate. Hopefully the rest should be straightforward but I suspect not so I shall keep your idea about the spring in mind.

Primary removal
Roger,
Yes, primary case removal is required for any work on either stand. I had to remove mine again during my current rebuild when I found I needed an extra 7/8" added to the main stand. How I laughed!
Like me, you'll be glad of the practice!:-)

Sometimes the outer primary…
Sometimes the outer primary cover fouls the side stand and has to be cut away, may be able to remove some metal from the stand frame clamp.

Spring first?
Roger, I'd be inclined to look at the spring first rather than taking (potentially) too much material off the side stand. It all depends of course on what parts of the stands are fouling each other.
Hope all turns out well.

Hi Roger,
I had a similar problem with my NOC sourced side stand sprint being snagged by the centre stand.
This was solved by turning the spring so it faced the other way. An explanatory photo (hopefully) is attached.
RGM put a bit more metal on the part of the stand that contacts the engine plate to enable fine tuning of lean angle. Maybe grinding some of this off will allow the stand to clear the main stand.
The NOC one fitted perfectly, with a satisfactory lean angle (neither too much nor too little) and once I'd turned the spring, there was no fouling.
HTH and good luck with it.
