Hello all,
Commando 1970 Desert Sled
I was in the process of replacing the sleeve gear seal and found that the sleeve gear and bearing slide side to side some, a lot to me. I am guessing this is not normal but I did not see any retainer for the bearing in the parts listings.
So is there a fix for this like using bearing mount to secure it to the case or does it mean it is time for a new case? Or possibly just new bearings will do the trick?
I attached photos one slid in and one slid out.
Thank you for the help,
Bill Fussell

Hi there Peter, It is…
Hi there Peter,
It is indeed the bearing floating in the case rather than the gear in the bearing. If you look closely at the photos you can see the difference position of the bearing in the case.
Any suggestions?
Thank you sir,
Bill

Could be a new case is needed. On a low powered dommy I would try some bearing fit which could survive in this low temperature situation.

The old fashioned fix for a loose bearing was to get a flash of copper plate put on the bearing outer diameter. Hope you find what has caused this.

John Hudson
Fixing a loose Gearbox main Bearing was a question asked of John Hudson many years ago. His solution being a thin line of bearing fit/lock, inside the bearing housing.

Thanks Gents,
Yelp it sounds like it is time to purchase a tube of bearing lock at least for now.
Thanks again

Have a look at the loctite web site, there are various different types of bearing lock. I think I used 638 on some main bearings with similar play.

Sleeve gear movement
Hi before you try Locktite check that the case is not cracked between the two bearings

Hi Bill,
Are you seeing end float of the sleeve gear? As you pull it out, it will normally abut the inside of the sleeve gear bearing. The bearing should stay still and the sleeve gear slides over the mainshaft and through the bearing inner.
As you push, the sleeve gear will slide the other way until it clonks with the 3rd gear pinion.
When the gearbox sprocket and nut are in place and secured, the sleeve gear will not move through the gearbox bearing at all. It will be clamped solid.
I suggest you replace the sprocket and securing nut and satisfy yourself that the sleeve gear, sprocket and nut are indeed immoveable in and out. All is then well. If there is lateral movement of the sleeve gear in this condition, you do indeed have a bearing floating in the crankcase. I'd suggest this is extremely unlikely.
