N15 primary case spacer

Forums

Hi there - just rebuilding a N15 and on to the primary. The inner casing has a spacer to the crankcase. I assume this is to clear the Matchless frame?, but the clutch basket rubs on the inner casing with spacer fitted, and the casing felt seal is right on the edge of the smooth section of the gearbox shaft.

Do I really need this spacer? - without it everything lines up ok and I am not fouling the frame, the sprockets line up, the clutch does not foul the casing, and the inner felt seal fits on the shaft.

HI Steve I think the sliding plate do not usually have a felt seal but could of been changed for a Commando set up. Are the front engine plates in the right way in the frame ?  The back ones I think only go in one way and are all the spacers still welded to the steel engine plates ? Regards Pete

I have recently helped a friend rebuild a 1965 N15CS yes it is very close but the spacer is there for a reason in our situation somebody had been in the clutch basket and it was full of loctite once we pulled it apart and replaced the spring mounting studs there was clearance.

Thanks, I did check I had the engine plates in correct, with the welded spacers on the drive side.

What was the reason for the primary chain case spacer?

I can put a thin spacer/shim on the clutch - it wont need much, and that will clear the inner casing. The primary chain is very close to the casing with the spacer fitted but it just clears..

I might even make up a slightly thinner spacer - maybe take a couple of mm off.

One other point - I fitted a Matchless centre stand but it wont clear the gear box lower stud - did they have centre stands fitted?
