Washer-spacer on camshaft

On the dynamo model 1956, should there be a washer/spacer/shim on the camshaft in the timing case, under the dynamo-driving spider ?

The original 1957/1958 Maintenance Manual Para 30 (dynamo model) states that there should be one.

The AN exploded view doesn't show one. I assume then that this is an alternator model drawing.

As I am finishing off the rebuild and don't have a washer (wasn't there when I took it apart) and living in SA, I will need to get one made. Can someone please tell me the dimensions, diameters and thickness?

Does it butt up on the shoulder of the shaft which just protrudes from the ds bush or does it go over the shoulder to butt up against the bush?

Any help will be appreciated.

Yes, Richard, there should be one, a 'Fibre Gear Distance Piece' p/n D12/1012, as far as I can remember it is just a hardened washer to counteract the thrust from the dynamo clutch spring, so is the same bore size as the cam bush, about an 1/8" thick, sorry can't be more precise.

Norvil have them, but listed as p/n 121012 for about GBP5, or failing that you could possibly try the late commando camshaft thrust washer 06.1086.

If you do an internet search for Baxter Cycles in the US, the 1956 parts book is there online.

That's useful.

I would buy it like a shot but living in South Africa it means importing it, our post office doesn't work here (8 months delay in getting a single letter from Germany), and the suppliers will only courier it. About GBP 30 courier costs!

So I'll get it made. I'll try Baxter for dimensions

If someone could give me more exact dimensions, that will be useful.

Hi Richard,

Happy New Year. Currently 38 Centigrade here at 11.00 so somewhat uncomfortable in the workshop.

I have stripped my 1953 Model 88 down to restore engine and crankcases so just been out to measure the thrust washer fitted to my camshaft.

Dimensions are as follows:

O.D. : 1.20"

I.D.  :  0.753" (cam measures 0.750").

Thickness:  0.094"

Naturally due to age of engine, washer thickness may have some wear so possibly may be 0.10" when new.

This is just what I need!

Again, on this engine "built by a specialist and I don't need to open it" when I bought it, another example of incompetence or carelessness. Wrong valve lengths, inlet valves fitted on exhaust side and so on.

Aargh!!

Thirty eight in your workshop! Is that the outside air temperature or do you have a metal roof or door?

That's hot even for us here in SA. My garage door faces the sun in the afternoon and at 34- 35C  I can't work.

Air temperature in the shade!!! (According to my weather station).

By the way a Commando washer won't really be suitable as it fits inside the crankcase and has a larger i.d.
