On the back face of the drive side crankcase, there is a number - 99C 3724. Delved into the forums and it seems to be a factory production number. A post says contact the heavy twins records officer to find out what is revealed , but, I can't spot who that is. Can someone help with this ? Regards, Terry.
Coil ignition 600cc …

Many thanks Robert, the bike…
Many thanks Robert, the bike is a wideline, 1959 with 12v alternator. It's fitted with a mag though , manual adv/ret, date stamped 7/58. I believe, as you suggest, it should be coil ignition. The ATD has all the bits missing and welded solid with a manual lever control. Worse ,the drive sprocket is well out of line, yet another lash-up on this bike !
The mag appears to be re-built, but I'm dubious as to the quality since the return spring was missing in the mag end of the control cable. Do I try to find a distributor ?
" Dominator 99, good original condition......."
I don't think Norton's were built like this !

Hi Terry, I have had mags…
Hi Terry, I have had mags and Dissies, If the mag is providing a good spark at kickstart speed ,I would stick with it. Dissies have their own issues and seem a bit flimsy and cheap compared to a mag. Easy starting is better with a strong spark and plugs benefit from a good spark if they are getting a bit sooty from wet sumping etc. Getting the mixture right makes a huge difference to first kick starting as I have found out recently ,this has become very important to my continued riding on the 99 as I have some issue with a very weak right leg. One feeble kick and its all gone !. I have Augmented my 12v dissie with a cheap electronic booster box (Boyer) that kicks out a strong spark.

I've just tried the mag for…
I've just tried the mag for a spark, at hand flicked speed. Feeble spark at 1/16" gap. Won't wear any wider. Checked the cam ring and it's not at 180 deg, around 4 to 5 deg error. Strange the bike started fine and pulled well.
A modern dizzy sounds good, but from what I've read so far, they still need either an ATD or just the drive sprocket. I have'nt yet found anything available , but the promise of a strong spark at exactly 180 deg and no points sounds like the way to go.
I might as well strip the mag and see how good it is and if it's worth getting recon'd. I'm happy with a mag if it's properly done.
Regards, Terry.

It's not unusual for a cam ring to be slightly out of kilter and not 180deg.
Splitting the difference ie 1 pot +2deg, 2nd pot -2deg was the usual recommendation (not factory I hasten to add). Shouldn't be an issue unless you've got a real firebreather, wild cams etc and so more sensitive to ignition timing.

My 99 is from 1959 with engine number 3659 - so quite close to yours Terry.
Mine came with a distributor and the factory records confirm that it was a distributor/coil ignition bike.
I have fitted a Boyer which goes inside the distributor and does away with the unreliable advance retard unit.
40 years ago I seized (piston nipped) a magneto 99 on my way to the Isle of Man and subsequent investigation found that the timing was 6 degrees out of sync between the two cylinders.

Yes, very tempting to go to…
Yes, very tempting to go to a dizzy conversion, but would need to find a dizzy first, then get the conversion, the coils, wiring changes etc. Not sure about kits that convert a mag to electronic, must be a tight fit. Must price this up carefully, still need a better sprocket to drive it all as my ATD has all its bits missing and was mig welded solid full circle. I know Lucas Rita has electronic advance, but not sure about the rest.
Work in progress !

Boyer in a 'Mushroom'?
Hi Terry,
As Robert says, getting a 'distributor' is good condition can be challenging too, as is finding a good mag reconditioner.
Another option is that there are mag replacement kits that use what looks like the 650 Mercury ignition housing available from the big suppliers. Not for the purists obviously, but I use one with a Boyer installed (I fitted a compact double ended coil as well) and you get super smooth idle, first kick starting, zero maintenance* and you can happily run with resistor type spark plugs and caps as well.
The units have advance curves built into the electronics box too. Only 'downside' is you will need to convert to 12v, but then you will be able to get bulbs and the like much more easily.
When I did mine 20+ years ago, they were significantly cheaper than a decent mag overhaul. Have no idea what the relative costs are like now though, and nowadays you can also fit other (e.g.Pazon or Tri-Spark) ignition systems to them if you prefer.
Hope this helps,
George
*zero ignition related maintenance anyway...

Thanks George, and it's…
Thanks George, and it's strange, but whilst rummaging for something else last night, I found a trigger unit in a box of "stuff" in the garage. Not sure if it's Boyer or Pazon but there is a micro digital box with it too as well as a twin output coil.
I think it was part of an abandoned Tribsa project I bought several years ago for a supply of bits , so should be OK for any twin. Same taper too, but I will have to find a better drive sprocket from somewhere.
Will be looking into this today, could be the way to go......
Regards all,
Terry

Damn and blast - foiled…
Damn and blast - foiled again ! Having had a close look at the Boyer trigger and digi box, it's for a 50 degree Vincent twin. I restored one 23 years ago and ended up using a Lucas Rita set up.
Up a ladder, down a snake.

Why not contact Boyer?
You might well find the amplifier digital bit is OK and you just need the trigger assembly?
Nothing to lose asking. Might get you a couple of rungs back up the snake!

Maybe so George, however - …
Maybe so George, however - Whilst re-checking the 180 degree thing on the mags' cam ring in a more scientific way , (it's exactly 180 ! ), I realised it would be possible, in the same rotary table, that I could simply remove one of the the 50deg triggers on the Boyer and put it back at 180.
If I send the mag off, it's a £400 full re-do, but It might just be something simple , it's so clean and clearly has new parts.
Decisions, decisions........

Send it out for testing…
If it’s proved good you can fit or sell with a test report. If it’s bad you can choose your path….

While we are on the subject…
While we are on the subject of ID numbers and letters ,It might be a good idea to tell owners that Engine/frame numbers on orriginal and unmolested bikes don't always agree with the orriginal log books and computer records due to Factory/dealer cock ups. If you find a discrepancy should you advise the DVLA ? .I would not dream of it ,god knows where that could lead. I have a good example in my 99. . Now that no one inspects the things ,let sleeping dogs lie. The EU inspections of transported machines could be a problem if machine and paper do not match ?.

while we're on the subject
That was the idea , I believe, behind the V5C, C for community. There is a certain number of Vincents , various places in the world , a few in Europe, that have the same frame numbers or engine numbers as a machine elsewhere. It was thought that the V5C would highlight these issues via mot 's when standardised by the EU. Now we're out of the EU I think a few owners will sigh in relief. My old Vin twin had an engine in Germany and a frame in America, thankfully, my frame was considered the original by the club but the engine remains a question mark.
At least my Dommie 99, whilst I keep finding more and more lash-ups, has the original buff log book and un fiddled with frame number. She'll be right by next year...........of course she will.......
Regards all.

Coil ignition 600cc Alternator model with distributor late 1950's or early 60's most likely in a slimline frame , could be a standard or deluxe . Some of the last widelines had coil too I think. looking at some engine numbers makes me think this could be made 58/59 so could be wideline or early slimline.
