Only Two Gears PT 2

Forums

So this saga goes on.

I decided to remove the inner gearbox cover and inspect the lay shaft and main shaft. Everything looked good so I tried reassembling but I am having trouble getting the extension on the selector fork into the cam plate.

I even tried partially removing the main shaft without success.

Is there a simple trick I cannot see?

Many thanks Roger

If it's what I suspect it is (based on my recent excursion inside a doll's head box) the second selector won't go in until you pull first and second gears off one or maybe both shafts.

By the way...when you say you can't select gears, is this with everything revolving? I'm sure you know it's not easy to select gears in a dry box without spinning it to align the dogs. Sorry if that's too obvious to say, but almost any straw might be worth clutching.

Did you tell us why you took it apart...and was it working or is it a collection of parts travelling in the same direction?

Thanks Ian and David, I took it apart simply because the clutch operating lever was not in line with the cable entry but then I spotted a couple of other small problems but when I rebuilt it I could then only select 2 gears and then ...

The Matchless owners club gear box strip said to fit the main shaft then fit the  selector in to the selector cam but I didn't seem to have any room to rotate the fork so the projection would enter the cam ring.

I have ordered Mick Hemming's DVD from the club, John Hudson's DVD didn't really show how this was done but for him it just seemed to slip into place.

How do you spell frustrated.

Something I forgot to mention, our website notes says to have the cam plate in the first gear position but I have also read somewhere to select 2 gear position on the can plate. Will either do?
