Chain catching on chainguard 71 Commando

I have at last completed my 71 full crank up Combat rebuild and pleased to say started first prod ! After a life in the US and many years dead ,it snow on UK plates but I have a problem !

On my first shake down to ensure oil is pumping and gears selecting , I have found that my chain guard which is hard against the rear brake plate (static) is catching the chain to the point that in a few miles I'm sure it will wear through ! I could perhaps force the guard over by inserting something 'wedgey' between plate and guard but that wouldn't last. I have double checked that all spacers are correct from the outsideview  at least and am sure that the new guard is correctly spaced off the suspension mounting bolt head . Any ideas anyone ?  I'm having a job attaching a photo

The only thing I can think of, assuming the rear wheel spacers are correct, is that the LH lower shock absorber bolt has a reduced head. If someone has substituded a regular bolt it will push the chain guard into the wheel.

Otherwise, yes a picture, or more detail in where exactly the chain touches the guard. They often rub and a little judicious pulling and shifting on the mounting bolts usually fixes it.

If the guard touches the brake plate it should still clear the chain. Has someone fitted a wider chain, o-ring perhaps?

.. a similar problem when I had Marzocchi rear units on my Commando. The lowere diameters were slightly bigger than the Girlings. I had to use a lump hammer judisiously to adjust the clearance....

I had same issue. It was caused by pattern chain guard and wider chain. Pattern chainguards are closer to chain.

I also had a similar issue with a pattern chainguard. The space for the bolt head was too big, causing the side of the guard to be closer to the chain. Bought a new guard from AN, which was much better.

Also helped to put the chain link the other way round. The chain link is normally 1-2 mm wider than the rest of the chain.

I found 2 shims placed the wrong side of the drum bearing thus pushing the sprocket towards the chain guard instead of away.

Hi, are you possibly using the wrong chain. Commandos dont like these modern chains with wide links. If so, you may find wear on the back side of the chain case also.

There is a special slim headed bolt that holds the chain guard tight to the shock mount. Its a real bugger to tighten , so you need a very slim spanner or a wedge to hold it.
