Hi,
Could somebody help me identify these rear shocks that are fitted to my 1937 16H, it was modified to be a dirt track bike back in the day and I need to rebuild them cause they lost all of their oil.
Does anyone also know if these old type of shock absorbers are completely filled with oil or is there also air left in them?
These might not be fitted to any Norton bike originally but I figured that this might be the best place to ask for help.
There is also a spring inside the covers that I didn't get a photo of.

Speculation...
...but they are reminiscent of those used on Vincents. There was a time they were used to fill holes in fences during the Suez crisis and other fuel embargos. Try their club...
As with all dampers there is a transfer of oil from one chamber to another via port possibly in a piston or sidewall. There must be a seal where the rod passes through the chamber top and the spring is immersed in the oil.
More pics of inside would help.

It would be interesting to see the frame mods too. Normally not much in the way of rear suspension in 1937.

More pictures of the shocks
Hi,
Here is few more photos from the inside parts of the shocks. The outside diameter of the shock body is about 1" and the length of the body excluding thread is about 5".
I cannot find any marking on the shocks except small "Ix Ix" markings on the bottom of the shock body and small flag with number "12" inside the flag on the oil filling hole.
I was just wondering if/when I get these together how much oil should I put inside the shock, I'm guessing that it shouldn't be full of oil? Is the normal filling amount half of the volume oil or what?
I'll take a few photos of the modified frame this weekend and post them. From what I can understand the frame was modified by some company in Sweden back in the day, there is "SKT" marking inside and oval on one of the modified frame rails.

Yes they should not be…
Yes they should not be filled 100%, 50% would be a good starting point. You will need to do a priming pump until they fully damp, then leave them overnight and test again, if they do not damp on the first stroke then add more oil and start the process again repeating until you get the right oil level.

Pictures from the rear modifications
Hi,
Here is few photos from the modifications of the rear end of the bike. The rear swing arm is missing from the bike in the disassembled photos but it's shown in the older one.
I'm test building the bike atm because when I bought it, it was in boxes. After I get it together and parts rebuild I'll disassemble it and paint it.

The only UK manufacturer that springs to mind with the cast yoke fitting was AMC...Are they a version of the pre-Jampot AMC shocks ?
