It absolutely be done, but be careful that you don't upset the rivet counters!

We fitted a pre-MK3 battery carrier as well as an RGM slimmed-down ham can.

I much prefer the look compared to Darth Vader’s helmet.

The only challenge is the top fastener on the left sidecover, which is usually attached to the black box.

The necessary bracket is available to address this though!

This looks very neat and will look to modify my Mk3 like this.  I'm intrigued with the term "ham can", please enlighten me?

Why did you fit the pre-Mk3 battery carrier?

...the slimmed down filter doesn’t sit up against the battery carrier like the full size one does.

However, to make the filter assembly a little bit more rigid, we decided to secure it to the battery carrier using some little hex standoffs.

Probably not needed (otherwise Roger would have included them in the kit) but we went for the belt and braces approach.

The side panel and top of the filter are indeed secured to the frame tube bracing plate.

Surprisingly, the holes were already there for these.

I guess it’s because the pre-MK3 filter box looks a little bit like a tin of ham.

We went for a pre-MK3 battery holder, as we wanted to fit a larger battery as well as stow the after market reg/rec neatly out of the way.

I ran a standard 750 air filter on a Mk3 850 for a while with the original battery tray before I found a 750 type (in the days before anyone made repros).  It fits OK, but from memory, the front lip is slightly shorter so the back of the box will need spacing out...presumably longer than Grant has done if you're using a small box too.

The main aspect that I had to deal with if continuing with the laterally mounted battery is that with the black box gone, there is little to stop it trying to fall forwards but presumably you've dealt with that using the K&N ?
