Covered in sludge, what can I clean it with, concerned about dissolving the shellac on the coils?

Thanks

hello now being female  I think that cleaning info is on my cards  and for cleaning alternator,s I clean my one with white spirits on a new clean  cloth and have another to dry off  and you can clean your bike with white spirits it leave a thin lair of oil and this protects your bike from Mr rust worm ,   And you can  use clear spirit vinegar   for the seat it gets the dirt of and grime off and will sterilise to seat as well, As vinegar is a antiseptic  and also good for cleaning glass like your headlamp   Yours  anna J

Hi Peter, I  said parafin because its the same base as the oils used in the primary for years without issue.  I use white spirit to thin paint and clean out brushes , whether it  would  affect the varnish on the stator coils I have no idea..

It was my Dad who advocated cleaning bikes and bike components with paraffin and a brush. Paraffin will thin any oily deposits and penetrates any threads. It then leaves a thin oily deposit on any surfaces it has been in contact with which gives corrosion protection. The use of degreaser and or pressure washing does quite the opposite - removing any oily deposits and putting water where you really don't want it - screw threads, bearings and whatever.

I'm not sure about cleaning with white spirit. Good for paintbrushes but I'll stick with paraffin for everything else.

Hi Gordon,  When rebuilding an engine  I use parafin first then a  pressure washer to ensure any abrasives or grit is well flushed out .Parafin seems to be dispersed this way (when petrol is not) ,however rust will quickly form so I blow dry with a leaf blower !, then either oil surfaces or rinse with an old petrol/2stroke mix. Waste not ,want not  !. My son has an incredibly powerfull battery powered blower to air dry his bike after washing.  Really amazing bit of kit.

Leaf blower dryer- I would never have thought of that! On the same lines, I suppose for smaller bits, engine rebuilds etc you could use a hot air gun. Failing that, nick the wife's hair dryer- just don't let her see you.....
