so wipac are ok
hello so wipac are ok then I heard many stories about them failing My one is in original condition and must of worked 35 years ago I bought a new wiring harness as the old one the wire were all the same colours and the switches and rectifier looks good Anyway I need to find out more On Navigator wiring and the best use of lighting and ignition ETC Yours Anna J

Hi Anna, I agree with Ulrich,…
Hi Anna, I agree with Ulrich, the dear old Wipac original 6v alternator will provide 12v with both out put wires connected together. However, if you don't have one or if yours burns out the way mine did do not despair - the Lucas RM21 12v alternator stator fits, works perfectly well with the Wipac rotor and only cost me £54. It also produces more output than the Wipac alternator and is encapsulated so should last longer - you will of course need to buy a new 12 v Rectifier / Voltage Regulator (I used the matching modern Lucas one at reasonable cost) 12v bulbs and do some simple rewiring to remove the old 'Emergency' circuit of the old 6 v system. I kept my 6v horn which seems to run happily on 12v and is now loud enough to be heard! Changing to 12v and Pazon electronic ignition (others are available) has completely transformed my Navigator and I can't recommend it strongly enough. Timing it is an easy ten minute job and allows you to use a strobe to get it exactly 24 deg BTDC at full advance ensuring against piston damage / seizures on an engine that is very sensitive to timing. It is maintenance free, totally reliable and makes the engine tick over without hesitation and pull cleanly, smoothly and healthily to give maximum power with minimum vibration. Al Osborn can provide all the advice and components you need and has wiring diagrams on his web site. Good luck and keep us updated on progress! Cheers Nick

Electra Rotor
i believe Al Oz has writen elsewere on here that the Electra crank has a larger diameter (presumably to take the starter dog) and a Lucas alternator does not fit, nor can it safely be bored out to suit.

Andrew & Michael, if it…
Andrew & Michael, if it helps the Lucas rotor won't fit the Navigator crank but I am running my original Wipac rotor with the Lucas RM21 (LU/47204) 2 wire stator and although the airgap is a little wide it produces ample charge to run the bike on full beam without draining the battery. Although I would check with Al Osborn who will confirm. I think the Electra has the same Wipac rotor.

Wipac rotor
I've been running my navigator with an encapsulated Lucas (3 wire) stator and Wipac rotor, seems to work fine, wired for 12 volts. Would have replaced the rotor as well but the lightweight, as has been pointed out, has a larger diameter bore than "normal". I thought that all bikes with a Lucas (and Wipac and Miller) alternator had a 3/4" diameter seat for the rotor?

All lightweights
All lightweightweights have 1" cranks to take the Wipac rotor. The Lucas rotor cannot be bore out to do the job. But any Lucas based stator can be fitted. If you insist on running 6V then you need the RM19 lucas stator. If you want 12V then connect two wires together on the RM19 (and the Wipac ) or fit the RM21.

rm 15 lucas
hello well I want to leve things as they are even after fitting new wiring harness and I will still go with the old system and fit a RM15 with Emergency starting and I still have the original Rectifier look in good order and so do both switches the RM 15 is a four wire job and Royal Enfield do one like it I wounder if they fit a Norton Lightweight twin and the wipac Stator and rotor off the bike look fine But no Idea if they work I have Make a rig on one of my many Electric motors And Try it out, The only thing thats suspect is the Bob weights spring for the points and timing the backing plate seems to have been braised up but fitted all wrong to my thinking is there a another motorcycle out there with a similar back plate set up as this would be nice to know Yours Anna J

Anna, I use the original Wipac rotor and a Commando Lucas stator on my Navigator. I changed the electrical system to 12 volts.
