Forums

Hello to the lightweight owners now some advice on repairing two holes in my primary outer cover the two holes are at the bottom rear and are about 3/4of an inch in size, I was going to fit a alloy plate made to fit and by using BA2 screws and tap will this alloy home made plate be better on the inside or out sides and then alloy weld the hole in from there ,Your Anna J

Hi Anna,

I don’t have Aluminium welding but successfully fixed a pretty large hole using Alutite, it’s clever stuff you can use with a mapp gas torch, it’s a bit like a solder except it actually bonds with the surrounding aluminium by creating a lower melting point alloy. It doesn’t stick to ferrous material so you can make a mould on the outside with thin steel. That then leaves you to fill the hole in the case from the inside. I then used a file and sander to smooth out the finish and polished it up. It’s not concours but almost invisible.

hello now thanks for your input I am going down that aluminium welding road  the outside of the case I hope to screw a plate over both holes in one go so I can then weld these hole up from the insides and flat of any weld with my finger sander that get into the nooks I going to try to make a good and permanent job of it But it's not going to be a piece of cake,  to do hope to get some photo later  yours  anna j
