Jubilee workshop manual

Forums

Hi,

first and foremost, thanks to Andy Sochanik for directing me to this site. I have purchased a jubilee that requires some restoration, but I would like to make it a cafe racer. Are there any recommendations for a jubilee workshop manual that will help with stripping and rebuilding the engine. I want to see what if any modifications or improvements have been made before fitting electronic ignition. Please see the picture for details of my purchase. The registration document states it is 500cc from 1982. I know this is wrong , from dating information it was built circa 1963.

Thanks Gary

The best manual is the Norton one in my opinion although you have to watch as it has an error in the gearbox section!  They turn up on eBay, the club also sells one which isn’t bad, they make a good pair.

There’s not much you can do to a Jubilee to increase performance, there’s a few threads on the subject that I started when I was looking to do the same! Obviously exhausts and electronic ignition can make a big difference, converting to 12v is dead easy, I tried a concentric carb and gave up, I think the monoblock is better anyway..... just more expensive!

My jubilee is far from standard, being more like the bike I had as a teenager, Aluminium mudguards etc.

Good luck and post some pictures as you go!

Manual

Hi Dan,

many thanks for that. I definitely will be fitting electronic ignition, did read somewhere that the shaft needed the taper altering to allow the rotor to clear the stator. Also, seem to remember someone saying that the valve springs can be replaced with Kawasaki items to stop valve bounce which seems to limit power. Will certainly post some pics when I get started.

Welcome Gary

Andover Norton stock the Manual https://andover-norton.co.uk/en/shop-details/20531/workshop-manual-light-heavyweight-twins-pre-commando

Part No. 06.7371 £19.95.

National Motorcycle Museum is also work checking in the Bruce Main-Smith collection of photocopies, e.g. https://www.nationalmotorcyclemuseum.co.uk/product/norton-1959-illustrated-spare-parts-manual-250cc-jubilee-o-h-v-twin-norton-publication-ps205-simpson923/

I don't own a Jubilee but I have a soft spot for them - passed my test on one in 1972.

The full details of fitting Boyer Bransden is on my web site. Yes it is preferable to set the rotor a few mm further into the cam to stop it impinging on the back of the pickup plate. 12V is needed and retain the two original 6V Wipac coils if fitted.

hello now I Do agree this club could do with publishing it own lightweight Restoration Manual  Witch would help any owners to accomplish his or  her  restoration and engine rebuild  As this type of information is hard to find most maintenance Manuels I have seen are lumped together with the Heavy Twins  I would be really good to have one just for lightweights twins  with all the tips and tricks  in it and published by the men that know these Lightweight Nortons,                                                                                                 Yours   Anna J

There is some lightweight rebuild info in the forum “Technical” heading under “Lightweight“ - this is a compendium of most stuff that’s been published in the Club Magazine - only real problem with it is it’s not downloadable to print (at least that I could find!) but I found it very useful.
