Hi, rather than pay the best part of £50 for a specialist tool I may use once if lucky and 2 or 3 times if not, has anyone found a multipurpose adjustable tool that can do the job?

There are 2 apparently…
There are 2 apparently identical tools , One is said to fit Triumph and Norton,but only actually fits Triumph! (but can be angle grinded to fit a Norton.) , the other fits a Norton.

.. try anything else. The proper tools fits securely behind the gearwheel - anything else runs the risk of chipping a tooth or worse.
That does sound expensive although I bought mine 40 years or more ago....
