Jubilee tank badge on eBay

Yep, it’s in my watch list - not sure (yet) whether I’ll need it as already have a pair + one RH spare.  Just de-chromed & cleaned up the spare RH one, now working on LH one - just got to keep fingers crossed it’ll come up the same as one I’ve done (see pics).

Don’t really know where to go/what to do with them once both are “polished” - anyone got a recent chrome company that’ll do them?

I've used a company called Silvabronz to plate Zinc die-castings with good results. Details below...

Not cheap, but you get what you pay for.

Dies castings are hard to strip, because the chemicals used to strip the Chrome and Nickel also attack the base metal (zinc). If there is a copper under coat it can be a bit easier. The other problem is the pits in the surface - they will appear larger after stripping, and have to be filled.

Hi Dan - lots of hard work.  Rotary wire brush, sandblast, rotary sander, sandblast, dremel sander, file, wet & dry.  Then buff!!!!  The second one I’m doing doesn’t have a lot of chrome left on it thankfully.  Didn’t do the inner surfaces - seemed irrelevant!

Not sure whether to have re-chromed or leave as bright mazak (zamak?) - after all they’re mostly zinc and polish up well - then try laquering.  Chroming would be better for originality but struggling to get responses from chroming companies that say they can do it!

Any recomendations - anyone?

In a recent showing of Salvage Hunters: Classic Cars on Quest TV they had some heavily pitted mazak mouldings spray-painted in chrome finish and the results were extremely impressive (and relatively cheap) so it may well be worth trying something like this:-

I am in the process of getting my Navigator tank badges ready for re-finishing, as commented above I looked into having the chrome chemically removed and was advised against it by the chrome company, so I have mechanically removed the old chrome which was not as difficult as I was expecting. I have been left with lots of pits and damage from the rusting old chrome which I plan to fill with car body filler then have them chrome sprayed by "Mikirs" in Stonhouse as they are not too far from Cardiff; the finish shown on the website looks good and the cost I think will be around £60.

Is the tank shown in your attachment actually "chrome sprayed"?

If so, it is a great alternative.

I had the petrol tank panels on the dominator rechromed by south wales metal polishers in Treorchy for anyone in this area. Seem to be fine. Hugh

A decent price and a good quality except one deep pitting hole which could not be sanded or polished out.

Can´t remember and I do not have the invoice at hand right now.

hello   now a few weeks ago I bought two sets of lightweight slimline tank badges  one set I am using as a pattern  to make some new ones  the other nice set is going on my Navigator but just of late 3 more lightweight tank badges have come up for sale on eBay Norton Parts and yes guys it getting harder to find good parts  but keep looking  do not give up it's out there, you just have to find them there hiding everywhere  in old barns and sheds  and lofts and roof spaces  and sometime cellers too so keep your eyes and ears open at all times  and go bags that bargain   Yours  Anna J
