In RH386 Feb 2020 Pg 39 we have an item about putting LEDs onto the lightweight and retaining 6V. Initially it seems a good idea, but is it? The cost of this upgrade is £100 or more, and at the end, (following the RH article) you still have points ignition and original wiring according to the colours (maybe 60yrs old). After all the LED saves some power (lovely on Dynamo bikes) but very little point with alternators.
I would advise the change to 12V which would also give you the opportunity to get a better ignition with going electronic. (reduced vibration, less servicing) (the cost of coils doesn't exist as you retain the 6V Wipac ones). And of course a rewire due to 'time up' on the original wiring.
By the way the alternator diagram on Pg 38 is incorrect, it is still safe and will work but the wiring inside the Wipac stator is not thus. It will work ok provided you follow the colours not the diagram.
Thanks for pointing out the errors Al.
