Good Paint shop and good chromium plater's recommendations please

Dear Forum Members,

I am looking for a quality Paint Shop and a good Chromium plater. I live in Cumbria and was hoping to find these services within reasonable distance of my home. I am hoping that someone can point me in the right direction for a quality Tradesman.

Thank You, Graham powis

But I have used Chromefix in Brum 3 times and each time had excellent and reasonably priced results: http://www.chromefix.co.uk/.

I've used a painter called Lee Chambers, based in the Black Country for some work on my Guzzi - he did a superb job at a very decent price but did take his time. I'll let you have his details if you're interested.

Hello, Ian,

As I have no leads to follow up at the moment any information I can get would be useful. You don't seem to be able to get much done up here in Cumbria. I suppose when it comes down to it it's worth travelling to someone for the paint work if they will do a good job. Please can I ask you for the details you've got. Thank you very much for taking your time to reply to my post.

Many Thanks, graham

Hi Graham,

I am almost finished my rebuild and used Prestige Platers in Mexborough for the chrome and Dream Machine in Nottingham for the paint. Delighted with the results but still a distance from you. I can send details if required.

If you log into services at the top of this page and enter your post code it will bring up other alternatives in your area.

Regards

Dick

Hello Dick,

I have just had a look at your Machine, you must be very proud of it. Am I correct in saying that it's an 88, apologies if I'm wrong on that, although I love the 50s & 60s bikes I am more familiar with the Commando models. Thirty years ago I restored the Commando that I still own today and getting things done seemed much easier back then. Thank you for telling me about the 'services' feature; I wasn't aware of it. I may have already said but there isn't many options for Classic Bike lovers in Cumbria. Anyway, I have noted your recommendations, thank you very much for taking the time to post them.

Kind Regards, graham

AMENDMENT, I hadn't twigged the services section, I have just had a look at it. thank you for pointing it out. I had no idea there was so many firms involved in old bike's within a 100 miles of me.I would still appreciate personal recommendations from forum members, 'word of mouth' as they say!

Hi Graham,

Glad to be of help, yes I prefer recommendation too.

The bike is a 99, I don't think that there is any obvious way of telling the difference without looking at the engine/frame no.

I bought it in 1962 and rode it very hard until 1970 when a con rod popped out and between raising kids, changing jobs and moving house several times it is finally coming together.

Good luck with finding platers and sprayers up your neck of the woods.

Best Regards,

Dick

Hello Dick, thank you for your valued input. Like you I have owned my Norton a long time and would never part with it. I have now been given some leads to follow up and I shall report my findings on the Forum.

I live on the North Yorkshire coast and I asked for recommendations last year.  Unfortunately I did not get any recommendations within 200 miles and my tank is still waiting for a respray.  Ideally I would like a spray shop that is between Leeds and Newcastle.  Dream Machine in Nottingham is the nearest yet and I may opt to go there even though it is 150 miles away.  Having said that I do hope that you find one in Cumbria as it would be nearer for me.

There are spray shops around but most of them seem to do bike tanks on the side.  I am also wary of getting the lines in the correct position because I have seen examples where they have been misplaced.

Thanks,

Pete

Hello Peter, It seems to me that it's more difficult to find good services when you live in a remote location. I have now got a couple of irons in the fire, I will report on the Forum if I find any good firms offering these services.

Now the country's best chrome platers are Quality Chrome Kingston upon Hull and the country's best p

Auto paint suppliers are Nu-agane paints Bedford.

Thank you for your chrome plating and paint shop recommendations. I haven't done any restoration for some while and have lost touch. I will follow up these  companies and see if they can help.

Following a recommendation from here I used a guy called Shane Rybicki at Faircharm Restorations in Leicester. Not cheap and he’s always busy .......code for you might have to be patient, but a brilliant job. I believe he only works on vintage bikes and cars.

Hope it helps.

Hello Ian, Leicester is a fair trek from here but thanks for bringing this chap to my attention. I'll have a look at his web details. I get the feeling that he would be a 400 mile round to go there though so hoping to get sorted a bit closer to home. Thanks for thinking of me.

Hello Graham.

25 or more years ago there was a chrome plater in Currock, Carlisle. I don’t think that he is still, there, all though I can still visualise him, as black as a crow, presumably from the polishing, in prep for the plating.

I did a quick search online; and see that there is a plater, specialising in vintage car and bike work based just north of Carlisle at Sandysyke.  I have no idea on their standards and the webpage is somewhat under developed...... They may be worth a try. Vintage Chrome Ltd.  Good luck.....

Not sure where you are in Cumbria - I am just outside of Caldbeck.

Hello Edward,

I'm near to Newby Bridge. I think I have found a suitable company in the Leeds area, I will report my findings on the Forum.

Regards Graham
