Thanks for getting in touch Dan, as it happens a rather fine chap by the name of Stan has managed to sort me out. Mine fell off last week, ticked me off a bit for being so dozy not having tightened it up properly. Live and learn hopefully.

I lost a battery box cover and did Exactly what Dan thought. I cut an oil tank in half ,patched it up , turned it upside down and it just fits. It is still there now. A lot of work, and waste of a good oil tank. But if your stuck.!?

gearbox sprocket nut 1 1/2`` A/F
I am having difficulty removing the gearbox sprocket on my early Navigator. Is the nut holding the sprocket a left or right hand thread ? Any tips or suggestions ??

Hi Graham, it is a left hand…
Hi Graham, it is a left hand thread and the nut is locked with a tab washer which needs to be flattened before you can undo it. I know it is stating the obvious but the sprocket needs to be firmly locked so it cant rotate - I always leave the chain on and lock the chain against the swinging arm with a length of thin but strong metal bar to avoid damaging the crank cases. With the gearbox mainshaft in place it is next to impossible to get a socket onto the nut and there is very little room for a spanner. If you are lucky enough to have a long box spanner to fit then the nut will usually come undone with care and persuasion. However, in the past I found the nut seized so tight on my late Navigator I have had to use a drift on the nut to break the 'stiction' and accept that I had to replace the nut which is available from the NOC shop. However, beware because the nut for your earlier gearbox is not listed although the tab washer is! Take care and good luck! Nick

Hi Graham, further to my last after a careful search of the Norvil catalogue they list your retaining nut under; Part number: 041271 - Nut Gearbox Sprocket Lightweight Twin before 106838: £12.00 but from experience it might be worth giving them a ring to make sure it is in stock and order it before committing yourself to wielding a drift!!! Excellent tips and suggestions Nick. I will explore. Knowing others have had similar problems and remedies helps when you have tried stuff and are stuck . That is what this forum is all about.
Will update.

For some reason there are more oil tanks than tool box covers! Pleased to see my idea would have worked!

I have a “nos” one I bought, sadly it’s a tiny bit too small and won’t fit over the box, ( I think is a remanufactured one) I’m sure it could be made to fit by stretching it a little if you get stuck but would need someone with acces to heat or panel beating skills. . I can send pics if it helps? Failing that I thought about cutting an oil tank to see if that could be made to fit!
I solved my prob with a nice metallic red one from ebay, they do turn up from time to time.
