Sleeve gear seal

Hello All,

I purchaed a seal from the spares schem (for the sleeve gear). It looks to be the one in the picture by the markings on the outside. It part number 041267 and it seems to be common to all manner of AMC gearboxes.

I cannot get the polished sleeve that buts up against the rollers of the sleeve gear bearing through the sel. Or rather--I can--with excess force get it to go through backwards. It will to rotate then however.

I would not be able to get the sealto push over the seal centre even if it would move. An engineering friend of mine assures me ity is simply the wrong seal and that it is too small in the ID.

Has anyone had any expereince of this? her has ordered one via work but (I have not seen it yet) it is deeper. I saw someone on the AJS owners saying that they bought one from Norvil and that it was too deep for the AJS lightwight gearbox.

Has anyone any experience of any of this?

I have changed the seal several times in the past using the replacement seal from the NOCshop. (part number 0412670. It always fitted without any problems; I never even thought about it-it just fitted without any second thoughts.

So either the seal is wrong size or the distance piece is the wrong one. Did you have an old seal that came out to compare?

My thoughtsd exactly--sadly I threw out the old seal hen it took the engine down. I do no know the dimension for the seal centre/distance piece. The looked just like the one on the picture--unfortunately if was rather rusty in the spring area so even it it had have fitted I dounbt I would have used it.

Has anyone any dimensions for the distance piece--seal centre?

Very much appreciated. I have got an alternative size but--the original seems to be non-standard (or is today). The alternative is a twin lipped (actualyl one lip and a wiper). Its fit on the seal centre is still tight but more resonable than the one I got from ther spares scheme. It would however stand proud of the case by 2mm or so. I would have to relieve the boss on the sprocket and enure that the lip on the seal centre/spacer did not contact the lip of the seal--IE not opush it home comepletely or find a small ring to go in the recess.

The seal centre is not offered as a spare by the club and the parts book, while picturing it--does not list it.

hello John,

The part number is 041391 - Axle sprocket spacer. It has the same part number from 1959 to 1961/62 including the Navigator. I can't say about the later gearbox- this might be different. Sorry I have no measurements.

Hello Dan,

Mine is an early one as well. I would be interested in the size. I have as I mentioned a way around it with all sorts of messing about--turning material off the boss on the bike is fun is fun (not) even with a tipped tool. I too have had distractions--Triumph wanting to imitate the circus exploding car (dry joint is the wiring for an electonic ignition)and a friend with a scooter going wrong (carb drain plug leaking--I wish I'd noticed that before I broke the CDI unit).

Ok not sure if this helps but the spacer is stepped, the larger diameter bit buts up against the bearing, and looks like it should be inserted before the seal is fitted. The od of the face of the spacer that is sealed by the oil seal is 30.31mm (1.311") the od of the bigger lip is 34.95mm (1.375") but note this is a lidl digital calliper I'm using!

Hello Dan,

Thasnks for this. I put it together together today using a seal a mate of mine sourced from work--the twin lipped one I mentioned rarlier. It looks as if my spacer my have been odd. I cannot measure it now but it was 33 mm or near to on the OD of the sealing face--I never measured the larger diameter--I wonder where it came from?

To complete/correct dimensions given above:

The spacer is stepped, the larger diameter bit butts up against the bearing, and it should be inserted before the seal is fitted.

The ID is 1.125" (1-1/8") or 28.5mm

The OD of the face of the spacer that is sealed by the oil seal is 33.24mm (1.31")

And the OD of the bigger lip is 1.375" (1-3/8") or 34.9mm

The depth (length) of the spacer is 10mm exactly (0.394")

The depth (length) of the lip is 2.4mm (0.095")

 

I've looked for it here in UK (PNo 041391) but no one seems to list it
