Forks to Frame

I've been slowly sorting through my boxes of bits for my Jubilee. I have a frame (together) and a set of forks in bits. It would appear that the steering pin? and bearings are missing to fit the frame to the forks. Can anyone enlighten me how they connect and are the parts are need available anywhere? Also for some reason i have 2 rear wheels and no front. Could you advise where to start looking for a replacement?

Get yourself a free PDF download of the Norton Twin Repair Manual (1960-68).

I think I got mine from NOC but I can't recall how.

The manual is a rich source of information.

The diagram of the forks (attached) is from the manual.

Some parts can be obtained from the NOC shop and I think I have a spindle that is serviceable but not perfect. I know the spindle cap nut is sold in the NOC shop, it may be listed in the 'Stainless' section

It is quite a job to get the ball bearings to stay in place whilst assembling the steering head; I used heavy grease and help from wife!

Wheels come up on eBay quite often just search 'Norton Jubilee, Motorcycle Parts'.

Hello Martin,

Dennis has already passed on to you some very useful information re spares and especially getting yourself a manual.

Are you aware that there are quite a number of differences between an early Jubilee and a later model ? e.g. the fork illustration given here is for a later 1961 on fork. The earlier 1959/60 is noticeable different but the steering stem was the same as far as I am aware. You mention a front wheel is required so you need to be aware there are several different front wheel spindles - depending on which fork sliders you have. Maybe you already have a spindle.

There are also major differences in the early/later gearboxes and even the engine casings/mountings can be different. So make sure you do your research especially if you are buying poorly described items on Ebay etc. What year is your machine ? Is it a De Luxe or a Standard.?

The bike i have was put out for the dustman about 25 years ago. The local dustman gave the bits to my brother and they have sat in his shed ever since. He then decided to scrap them so i took the bits on. Now i know i can source all the bits needed it's definitely a goer to try and rebuild it. Not a 5 minute job but worth doing.

Good point Parick about the differences with age of the Jubilee. Martin would do well to check the age of the bike from the registration. If the reg is missing Martin can find out a lot of information from the frame and engine number from NOC Registration Officer, as I did for my bike. The frame number is on the right footrest hanger plate. It may be covered by paint. The engine number is just below the left hand barrel stamped on the crank case.

The location of the frame number is indicated by the arrow in the picture attached.

I believe the Records Officer (see main menu 'Records') will do a basic check for free for members.

Thanks for all the comments. I have a reg number and found the frame and engine number. I have contacted dvla for a replacement V5 and was hoping that it will give me some more information. I will certainly contact the NOC records officer for some info. I am reluctant to purchase anything for the bike yet as Patrick stated, there are so many variations. To be quite honest, i do not exactly know what i have got yet. As a complete newcomer to restoring a Norton it is nice to know you lads are kind enough to give advice.

I bought my bike as parts in boxes completely stripped down. I did not know what was missing. Luckily, the engine was more or less complete but I have had to search for foot rests, a battery box, headlight seat, etc.

It has been quite a journey but worth it. Parts come up regularly on eBay and are not too pricey - yet.

The NOC shop has some hard to get parts e.g. wheel nuts, nuts in general, pistons etc., and Norvil sells parts. I would definitely recommend a new wiring harness either made yourself or bought on eBay unless your loom is in good condition.

If you have a problem one of us has probably been there before so it is worth asking.
