Sump Plug Size

Can someone please tell me the Electra sump plug size and thread.

Not sure about Electras, but navigators and jubilees donât have a sump plug, just a plate, although itâs not uncommon for one to be welded into the plate?

Ian,

The Electra, when it left the assembly line, had a rectangular aluminium plate, about 1/4 inch thick, secured at the lowest part of the engine. Removing the plate gives access to the gauze sump filter.

No sump plug, just this plate secured by four short studs into the lower crankcases with nuts, washers and lock washers.

The NOC sell a special sump plate to fit on longer studs, thick enough to have a handy central bolt for draining oil from the engine. Is this what you have? (Picture in the NOC shop spares for lightweights)

Or has some previous owner made or modified a sump plate for your bike?

Or do you mean the oil tank drain plug? This is a BSP thread.

I'm talking about the small plug on the bottom of the motor next to the large cam drum plunger. The PO or someone has stuck a small plug in this hole but its head is so large that it can't be tighten down because it comes in contact with the raised surface of the case seam. I need to replace this plug.

It sounds to me like the gear box drain plug these are available at NOC spares

I have my Electra cases apart at this time the gear box drain plug sits at the side of the plunger cam drum almost touching the case seam making it hard to get at it takes a 1/4 Whitworth this can easily become rounded due to its position Bryon

Jack, as Bryon points out it is very easy to round off the gearbox drain plug because of its position. I have replaced mine with an Allen bolt with a copper washer which is much easier to access and have had no problem since. I hope that helps.

And I made a copy of the drain bolt, but added about 6mm to the height of the hex head. Same reason as everyone else. Original is a bitch to undo and gets rounded.

I like Nick Clarke's solution better than mine.

We're all talking now about the gearbox drain bolt.

I stand corrected. Thanks for the info and suggestions. Being new to the Electra (not Nortons) I obviously have a lot to learn. But the processes is a treat.
