Mark McLennan

Neil Wyatt emailed me to say "Mark McLennan, my best mate, was killed in an accident yesterday, riding his SS Norton to the NZ NOC Rally in New Plymouth. Mark died at the scene. I'm totally gutted."

Very sad news ... .

Yes, this news has begun to circulate around the Norton fraternity this morning. Mark was active on the Norton scene not only in New Zealand but in a good number of other places around the world including the UK. I had the pleasure of riding with him on more than one occasion, and sharing accommodation with him at some rallies where he was always great company.

Little did I realise that when I said goodbye to him at last year's INOA Rally in Virginia I would not be seeing him at this year's event and indeed never again. He wouldn't mind my saying that it seems strange we will no longer be able to spend an evening together building a respectable pile of empty bottles and doing some good work for the Scotch whisky industry. Well informed about Nortons and always happy to share his knowledge, Mark will be missed hugely as will his sharp and cutting sense of humour which I always enjoyed.

Very sad news indeed, Mark was passionate about his Nortons and such a nice bloke, where ever he went he made friends. It was a pleasure to have ridden with him. He will be sadly missed.

I remember Mark as a good laugh and always ready for a late night out, and he liked sharing those lad/funny e mails around. The last time I spoke to him was at breakfast on the last day in Italy.

Losing Mark is a major blow - I found myself thinking about how I could say goodbye - so many good memories ... then went out on the Commando and rode for a hour through the twisties, hard and fast. I came home and downed a couple of big ones. Goodnight Mate. It was good riding with you.

A very sad day here downunder, he was definitely one of a kind and will leave a huge void in our Norton community and further afield. The very antithesis of political correctness, but with an absolute heart of gold. There will be more than a few IPA's and Single Malts downed in his name this week. R.I.P.
