Having become the proud owner of a Parts List for the 1955 Mod 7 and Dommie 88 I thought I would check the difference in the gearboxes of the two. Bear in mind that the Model 7 has the same box as the ES2.
The ES2/Mod 7 both take the G102 whilst the Dommie 88 uses a GB8.
My interest is that some members have the Dommie 88 box fitted to their ES2's (like mine).
I have drawn up a spreadsheet showing the different part numbers for those items which differ in the two boxes (it's a slow news day whilst I await a new bearing) and attach it for anyone whose interested.
Hope it helps.

Can't answer your queries…
Can't answer your queries definitively, John, but I gather from others that the reason guys fitted the GB8 to the ES2 is because it is a tougher design. It also has a shorter k/start shaft to keep the downward force when starting as close to the bike as possible to save it dropping to the right.

George,
I have a Laydown box GB8 6534, it came with some other Norton stuff, I was told the guy had raced Nortons and a lot of my stuff has come to me this way. Another number on the mounting is looks like GT 2BZ VAF. So it is off a twin, it looks in good nick, I think I may need an AMC box in the future so I might swap someone. Which box is sweeter, best/strongest?
There were modified brake plates too for racing, but I didn't mind using them as I am not building a Factory replica, and you can see one my bike a front brake plate that I have modified to cover the pepper-pot drill holes on my Pics re Post ROM.
