Laydown gearbox shims

I've copied this thread into "General" as it applies to more than one model and might elicit a quicker reply.

On dismantling the drive side (trying to find why it's back to not wanting to go into neutral) I find the following (laydown box mid fifties):

The main gearwheel bush (plate TN17) seems able to slide out of the g/box until it hits - presumably - the inside edge of the clutch spider. Is this normal?

The mainshaft has about 25 - 30 thou movement (float?) - my estimate - very tricky to check precisely. It's about 2/3 a millimetre (40thou). Is this OK?

If it's not and I need shims, what size do I get and where do they go? I would assume on the mainshaft at the timing end before it goes into the g/box inner cover?

Sorry for all the queries but as I have it all apart I may as well try and get it right - again!

Thanks for any help.

Yep! I put it on under both headings (Single and General)as it applies to both and hoped it might catch more responses as I would like to get it sorted swiftly. Oops. Don't what caused this font change.
