I've bought a timing cover from fleabay ostensibly for an ES2 but regrettably it doesn't quite fit. Everything is fine apart from the two fixing holes inside the timing chain compartment which are at different centres to the original.
Inside the unit is stamped the ref. "F911" and elsewhere "WM". Mine has stamped "N304"
Can any one shed any light on which machine the replcement unit is from or perhaps the year?
I may have to put it back on fleabay so it would be useful to know to which machines it can be fitted.

A picture would replace a thousand words George. You may be luckyand have something a bit more desireable.
When in corrrect physical position does either hole align?
Is there a Nortonscript, angled or parallel to the long sides? Any rib ?
With respect to numbers the cast in ones are more important thanthe builders stamped in ones when trying to determine origin.

The cast-in number is 1302…
The cast-in number is 13022 and below that WM. As far as I can tell these are on both units.

I have checked my 1948 Model 18 engine. The timing cove has the cast of WM1596 and also 13822 (maybe your 0 is indistinct and should read as 8). It also has stamped A278. The timing side crankcase has the cast WM1595 and the stamp A278. I take these to indicate that the WM numbers identify the parts and the stamped numbers reference a specific engine, probably in this case to match a pair that had the camshaft bushes line reamed. I aquired a spare timing cover and that has the same casting marks but is stamped B578, therefore from a different matched pair of timing cover and timing side crankcase. The mounting holes of both timing covers match the crankcase I have.
What is the WM cast number of your original timing cover and that of your new one? Is it in the series linking it to your timing side crankcase?

I can't check the casing now as it's with the engineering firm, Nick, but looking in detail at the pic I took I see that the stamped number is WM1382 with the hole for the retain bolt passing though any following digit.
