Evening,
Took the carb off tonight as I need to find the exact model so I can order the missing banjo and the refurbish kit. I have found a banjo on Ebay that fits 375 376 389 600 900 NORTON so I guess its one of these?
Overall condition dirty and looking at the float bowl its probably not pretty inside and my uncle probably didn't touch it. The slider inside moves and springs back but not as smooth as I expected so it will be taking a good long soak in my sonic bath then finally flushed through with carb cleaner.
I have eyballed the engine side of the carb and it looks around 1" 1/8 diameter if that helps could not see any markings.
Will post pictures one at a time as I am having trouble uploading on this site so hold tight. If there are any other pictures you think may help let me know and I will shoot some more.
Thanks in advance
Craig

Carb looks like std fitment …
Carb looks like std fitment , monoblock 376 . A sonic bath is good but does not usually clear the very small pilot drillings fully . The slide and body are likely to be both worn enough to make slow running and clean pick up elusive but will work enough to use.

I guess I will have a better idea once it is apart. I had some great results with the bath working on some Honda GoldWing carbs.

Looks more like inch and a sixteenth than inch and an eighth. 376 on the flange will confirm it's no bigger than that.
Hope I'm not being too obvious, but that air slide has to be held up out of the air flow for normal running.

Hello Michael,All comments…
Hello Michael,
All comments are useful to me on this journey. Most of my experience has been with slightly more modern vehicles so I am all ears and trying to gain as much experience as possible from you guys.
I prefer when people explain stuff, that they assume I know nothing lol.
Regards
Craig

Carb fully broken down
Okay I am glad i decided to pull the carb completely to bits it was not a pretty sight and everything was stuck together inside and would not have run in a month of Sundays as my father would say.
There is some slight wear at the intake tube, small what look like cracks on the edges but this could be replaced if necessary and I may be doing that to fit a gauze filter. I was not up to the fight to get it off tonight but will ponder that one.
The throttle valve has some wear on the one side, I was thinking of rubbing this with some very fine emery cloth but thought I would consult you guys first.
The part the throttle valve sits over (Could not find the name on the Amal drawing number 31) was jammed in tight and took a few light taps to pop out.
Everything else is in the bath for a clean an I will inspect further. The parts required so far from Amal come to around £35
I will post some pics up separately now guys if you give me time and I look forward to the input.
If you do spot and issue please give me the part number so I can follow along as i am still learning parts.

Once they have been through…
Once they have been through the sonic bath I will do them again in some fresh carb cleaning solution in the sonic bath.
All the brass I was going to give a swim in distilled vinegar and clean with fresh water and blow ot with the airline.
Order the parts and get it back on the bike.
Again any tips welcome.

number 31 is a jet block it has gasket on the base and is a tight fit, ME myself would sonic clean the lot. no emery tape . polish the slide and bore with solvol autosol . and try it on the bike. it easy to add new bit . you may fit new now to find the body is worn out.. the most you need is a gasket
washer kit PS you can use a very fine wet and dry paper

Parts Starting to arrive
The cleaning of the carb is going well so far with just a few replacement parts required. I have been cleaning the Jet block and the Throttle valve and I am not sure how easy these should slide over each other as you are overcoming friction resistance on the Jet block and the carb chamber it sits in?
They all go together nicely but they is resistance to them sliding if that makes sense? Should there be any resistance? Should there be a a light film of oil like ZX1?
I have never had a perfectly working carb to measure it against.

Throttle slide
You have certainly made a difference to the parts. The throttle slide should fall down by its own weight, with no help from the spring or cable attached. Under the circumstances (all nice and clean) I would think any resistance would be distortion somewhere. I wouldn't apply any oil, it will either be washed off or gather dust if not.

Thank you Stan I don't think its quite at that stage but I will perceiver with it. At the moment I am just polishing a bit at a time as its easy to take away material but not so easy to put it on lol.

Maybe a new throttle slide…
Maybe a new throttle slide required I can't see any distortion by eye but it wouldn't take much.
A new one is around £40 so not the end of the world but annoying.

Distortion
Any distortion jamming the slide will likely be in the carb body not the slide itself, usually from overtightening the flange nuts. Have you tried the flange on a dead flat surface to see whether it is bowed at all? Sometimes they can be carefully persuaded back into shape as simply fileing the flange flat again won't take out the distortion in the carb body bore. Your slide does look a bit scored though.
Best regards, Al.

When the flange bows it…
When the flange bows it pulls the body out of round and slides stop sliding, Better to press it all back to the orriginal shape. I have however persuaded oval bodies back into use with gentle sqeezing with an adjustable grip while checking with a vernier caliper . I also think the problem can be caused by years of heat cycles and missing/poor insulating spacers.removing metal is usually fatal to slides .Slides can also go out of round and benefit from a squeeze.

Interesting
Thank you gents, I have it working now almost how I think it should. I think I will try it on the bike and if all else fails I will buy a new carb from Amal. I have a budget for the bike to get it the point I can ride it and enjoy it and from previous experience with carbs a happy carb gives a happy bike.
So far buying what I need to replace has been around £35 which compared to what my Yamaha R6 cost this summer its a drop in the ocean.

It should be jammed in tight. Normally gentle application of heat to the body would be required to remove it, and the same to re-fit.

There is a tiny compensator hole
just downstream of the spray tube. Depending on the amount of throttle opening it may pass air or fuel - but being very tiny indeed it is prone to blockage with dried fuel. The most obvious symptom is a slight stumble as you begin to open the throttle from idle as you pull away. To clear it I use one short strand from a bicycle control cable, a pair of tweezers and a magnifying glass so I can see that I am doing. Just gently poke it in that little hole.

Hi Paul,
I have had the carb in the sonic bath and used the airline on it. I have cleaned by hand and polished so its working smoothly.
One more dip in the sonic bath today with carb cleaning solution and then I will fire carb cleaner in every orifice.

Carb too small?
I know the books say a 376 for the 19S, but in my opinion a 600 single would be better with a 389 - 1-1/8".

The compensator hole
is very tiny, and I suspect that a sonic bath may fail to clear it if blocked.

The slides tend to wear more…
The slides tend to wear more than the body. The monobloc you have has the slide better supported than the later Concentric type so yours is not as prone to wear as a Concentric. Even so, I would buy a new chrome plated or hard anodised slide. They last much longer. It's not good engineering practice to used the same metals in two parts rubbing together unless they are self lubricating like cast iron.
