Electra starter

Forums

Anyone used a non-original starter on an Electra?  Are there any known sources for replacements?

Mine runs great without the chain to the sprag clutch attached but barely turns the motor over before blowing a 25A fuse when connected up properly.  (Note:  the sprag clutch was bench checked and is working properly.)

Of course it will blow a 25A fuse, this starter like any electrical engine starter takes many 10s of amps that is why the cables feeding it are so heavy. There is NO fuse in the starter cable for this very reason. Also with such currents from a 12V battery you don't want any losses from fuses or fuse holders.

A check of the system if the starter is reluctant to turn the engine is to look at the battery voltage under load and make sure most of that is getting to the starter when you give it the 'go' instruction. There is bound to be some voltage drop but hopefully not too much. The biggest problem in this area is usually the battery not big enough-not up to the job or just plane tired.

Thanks for the info Alan.  I have a 25A fuse between the solenoid and the brown wire feeding the harness.  I stupidly put one between the battery and the solenoid as a temporary back up. I obviously have no electrical knowledge.
