Electra gear box 'O'ring

Forums

My Electra Parts List includes an 'O'ring  Footchange ratchet shaft 'O' ring, which isn't shown on Plate G the exploded drawing of the gearbox.Am I right in assuming that it fits between item 34 the return spring distance piece and the outer cover? and if so can it be replaced with 'O' ring 040079SQ available from the NOC shop.

Hi Francis,

I think  you are right as I recall there is a groove for the o ring but can’t recall if it’s in the cover or on the shaft! Either way the club sells a square section o ring, if that isn’t an oxymoron! I’ve found it difficult to fit and think I ended up using a round one from my box of assorted o rings! Either way the gearbox never seems to stay 100 % oil tight for long, I’m thinking of having my cover machined to take standard oil seals, but then it’s not standard anyway.

Hi Dan,

Thanks for the reply.Andy has answered the question,The O rings in question are located in the gearbox outer cover between the spindle bushes and the outer case,on both the gearchange and kickstart shafts. To my surprise this means removing the bushes to replace the O rings requiring the case to be warmed up.Not wishing to destroy the new O rings I propose to heat the case in boiling water and hope for the best!
