I noticed some odd scraping noises from the rear . My suspicion is that we have at some time introduced a "rogue" rear drum, With the speedo side axle and speedo drive removed the whole hub is very loose on the drive side stub even though its still done up tight, the three QD sleeve nuts are still tight and the hub halves firm with each other. Is this correct?, I have a sneaky feeling the drum is not machined properly. there is an additional large washer between the spacer and the swinging arm which is not listed.

The question I am really asking is should the drum be very loose on the stub axle when it is still fully tightened , I appreciate that it has to have radial clearance to allow the brake to centralise. Are there engineering drawings for the drum or stub, to enable checking? . With so many pattern parts around and our Norton suppliers contract out most work there needs to be some way to check. I can check if Rudge parts are correct ,why not Norton?.

After further thought,David is right ,its most likely to be the speedo drive rubbing against the ally trim plate, the stub has to have clearance to the drum or it would lock up. Likely that the spacer against the bearing is undersize or worn ,may have to fit a shim behind the speedo drive ,still a puzzle as to why the extra large axle washer is needed. Worth looking round the brake now i'm in.

I had a problem with my rear wheel. Tighten everything up and there was play. A spacer worked but made the speedo drive too tight.
New bearings and spacers had little effect. I eventually made my own spacers and by trial and error got the required result.
Not much use to you of course unkess you have a lathe,but it shiws these problems are common and can be solved.

Hi Robert, yes the drum will be loose until the long spindle is in place and tightened. This pulls the RH spacer, speedo drive, small spacer, and wheel with bearing spacer all across to the LHS against the stub axle creating a more or less solid unit between the swinging arm plates. One weak link is the speedo drive, it's only zinc alloy and will crush down.

This rear hub, similar to early Commando ones, relies on the RH axle being in place, and tight, to line up the hub and drum with the stub axle. There is no bearing in the brake drum to centralise the plot. There is a double row bearing in the nose of the wheel that could be worn. Also, only one of the three bosses on the brake drum that register in the alloy hub, is a close fit. The other two do nothing to centralise the drum. If there is a spacer issue on the RH side, it could be the hub cover plate scraping against the speedo drive.
