Hi. Where the brass sleeve goes over the output shaft that leads to the clutch, (see attached picture), should there be a seal or o ring on one side of the sleeve? If so, does it go on the inside of the gearbox, or on the outside of the brass sleeve? Thank you

Thank you for your reply. Would that be on the inside of the gearbox, or would it be accessible from the outside?

You'll need to purchase a new seal after collapsing the outer diameter and hooking out the reversed one. Alternatively, you could dismantle the gearbox and remove it from the inside. Upon reviewing your picture once more, if I were in your situation, I would position an "O" ring against the case end of the shaft.

Sleeve gear seals
Hi Philip,
That brass bush you can see is part of the sleeve gear assembly. The bush is a plain bearing on the gearbox mainshaft. No seal involved. Lubrication is by gearbox oil. Which in theory is a leak path gearbox oil into primary case. Not a problem. Things look normal.
You show the primary chain case rear seal. The seal garter spring referenced by Paul is perhaps out of shot, but if visible in this view you have the seal fitted correctly.
The seal lip has to be on the plain part of the sleeve gear at all times to work.
A loose sprocket securing nut on the sleeve gear can allow the sleeve gear to float into gearbox. Slips out of seal. Feel for end float on sleeve gear.
Sometimes when fitting a new seal, owners bell the thin back face of the primary chain case towards the clutch. Putting seal in a position where the lip is not engaged with the sleeve gear. Can be corrected by hammer and good wood block.
Your seal looks very close to the end of the sleeve gear.

Hi Peter, Many thanks for the reply. The primary seal is fitted the right way and is further on the shaft than it looks, very deceptive picture, so all good there. As for my initial concern, I was curious at to whether I was missing something, so thought i'd better check with you guys who are more in the know with these Nortons, as this is the first Norton I've owned. Kind Regards Phil

Don't know about the brass sleeve but I wager that the garter seal fitted is inside out!
The spring side should always be fitted on the inside keeping the contents within.
