I recently noticed that the tank oil filter on my Dominator was broken, so ordered a new one from RGM, part E2/398. It would not fit. After a bit of faffing around, I discovered the problem was that the new mesh filter is too long for a featherbed with laydown box. The new filter is 2 1/4" long, versus 1 3/4" long on the old damaged one. There is less than 1/4" clearance between the old filter and the clutch cable tube passing through the oil tank.
The staff at RGM had not heard of this problem and at a loss what to do.... Does anyone offer a tank filter or assembly which actually suits my bike?
Paul
Can you cut 1/2" off the end…

Finding a Filter
otherwise known as faffing about?
So far I have checked Andover Norton, who have a stub fitting union with a 1 1/8" filter. They say that they have no drawing for the threaded union on '40s-60s bikes, if they had they might make up a batch... NorVil offer the same item stub fitting with 1 1/8" filter and similar but 1 3/4" filter.
RGM offers several filters, with stub fitting or threaded fitting, but unfortunately the filters are 2 1/4" long.
Feked have various offerings but no Norton oil tank unions.
The sales person at NorVil says that Les Emery will be available on Thursday and Friday, so I will ask him if he can offer a suitable gauze. If so, I can buy a gauze for someone to solder onto my union or the E2/398/RM mistakenly sent by RGM. At the moment I still have both parts sent by RGM.

Take the new gauze out of…
Take the new gauze out of the new long strainer, shorten it and solder it to the old fitting.
I can do that for you

Finding A Filter
I just had a chat with Les Emery of NorVil. He identified a filter meeting my needs - 1/4" gas outlet, filter 1 3/4" long. It's part E2/392, available in vanilla, C and SS. C is chromed steel, not sure what vanilla is. Anyway, I have ordered one in SS.
So, assuming that I receive what I asked for, problem will be solved in a couple of days. Thank you for the offer, Peter, but I think I won't need to take you up on it. Oh, and RGM will be getting their offering back for a refund.

fitted at last
the new tank filter this afternoon. I had a month of immobility due to a leg injury, doing DIY.
The NorVil filter is nicer than the RGM offering, the hex for tightening it is much more regular. It went in as expected, then a snag - it has a straight bit between hex and threads for the pipe union.. Fortunately my bike has replacement rubber pipes retained by hose clamps, so I just loosened the lower one and slid the rubber pipe down Norton's steel tube and re-tightened it. But why the long nose?

Can you cut 1/2" off the end and solder the original cap back onto it?
