Hello All

Could anybody enlighten me as to why a new gasket is to tight to fit over the studs please. see pics.

It looks to me like you are trying to fit a 650 cylinder base gasket on an Atlas motor.  You could bodge it to fit but then might make it too thin in some places and just inviting oil leaks. I note that your gasket is the very early thin type (probably 8 to 10 thou). I would suggest using the Commando version which is usually 18 to 20 thou thick and will give a far superior joint.

I trust that the cylinder head gasket is for a 750 otherwise you are going to have even more fun with head bolts very soon.

The attachments show the slight, 2.5mm differences in the dimensions. The Brown gasket is for any Dominator less than 750cc.  The Blue gasket is actually for a 750 Commando but will fit an Atlas fine.

Hello Phillip,

Thanks looks like I am trying to fit a 650 gasket to my 1964 750 Atlas. I will source a correct gasket x2 as i am fitting a 0.9mm de-compression plate i.e a gasket either side of the plate. If the 750 gasket is 0.020 thou x2 (0.040 thou) i.e 1 mm this will give me a similar lift of the barrel to the decompression plate. Any more lift of the barrels will involve pushrods I understand.

Head gasket is of the solid copper type (spigot-ed barrel) and is a perfect fit after fettling.

Anyway thanks for your time.

If the gaskets a few years old they often shrink - just put in boiling water until soaked and it will be back to normal size.

Hello John,

I will have a go at soaking to see if it grows again. Phillip drew my attention to the 650 vs the 750 gaskets. Thought i was trying to fit a 650 gasket but no that is not the case. I have what must be really old stock 750 gaskets comparing to the pics that Phillip sent me so I can only think the things have shrunk over time a bit like we do.Think I will order new commando gaskets as Phillip sugests given the cost and the trouble if it leaks.any thanks for your advce.

Regards Paul.
