As I understand the style of speedo and tacho changed for the 1972 model year (change of dial face design). Can anyone tell me please when the factory actually started fitting the new style? I assume there was some kind of change over period between the old and the new....

my bike is serial number 205XXX
it has the old style gauges but I suspect they are not original to the bike - that is what I am hoping to ascertain.

Mine is 206XXX and has the solid green dot gauges so, unless mine are also not original, then more likely the change happened later than the strict model year change. Norton took a more relaxed view on exact part changes than BSA and Triumph took, if it fitted and worked then they carried on using the old part if they had excess stock. The MK2a gradually took more and more MK3 parts over its production life, even using MK3 frames at the end. This cut down on the number of parts to be changed at MK3 full introduction.

1972 model year started at 200000, no idea if the clocks changed exactly at that point.
